The Newcastle Bioinformatics Initiative

The Newcastle Bioinformatics Initiative (NBI) is a multidisciplinary cross-faculty project that works at the interface of Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Computer Science, dealing with a Systems Biology approach to issues at the interface. The group began its works in the year 2003 and has obtained significative results in several genetically-driven diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, Schizophrenia, cancer (breast, melanoma, colon, etc.), and Xeroderma Pigmentosum.

The NBI is part of an ongoing effort conducted in collaboration with other researchers currently working on Bioinformatics both at The University of Newcastle, as well as other institutions in Australia and overseas. It is built on current expertise in these disciplines and develops several subprojects with individual aims and goals.
Bioinformatics is the “first defense” against the deluge of data that is expected to overwhelm both researchers and decision makers in the 21st century as Biology and Medicine will increasingly depend on information extraction from databases and become large-scale, data-driven sciences. Accordingly, Bioinformatics was identified as one of Australia’s National Research priorities in 2002.
