Security of Statistical Databases
Individual data collected in surveys and experiments is typically stored
in statistical databases, i.e., databases which provide only statistical
information about groups of records with similar properties. Individual
values kept in a statistical database are very often confidential
and so should be protected from disclosure. In particular, a statistical
user who does not have access rights to individual records should be limited
to statistical queries based on more than one individual. Moreover, no
sequence of released queries should be sufficient to disclose confidential
individual information. The security problem for statistical databases
is to provide a control mechanism which would allow sufficient amount of
statistical analysis while protecting the confidentiality of individual
records.
